56th Street Gateway

The 56th Street Gateway is a several phase community development project focused on revitalizing the 56th Street area to enhance neighborhood aesthetics and functionality. The 56th Street Gateway Project, funded by HUD and managed by the Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA), is a transformative initiative revitalizing a key corridor in Southwest Philadelphia. This project celebrates community identity through public art, beautification, and infrastructure improvements, creating a welcoming and vibrant space for residents and visitors. With striking murals and thoughtful design elements, the gateway serves as both a cultural landmark and a symbol of ongoing investment in the neighborhood’s growth and renewal.

Park Ambassador Program

Park Ambassador Program is a hands-on initiative that empowers community members to maintain and revitalize green spaces while fostering environmental awareness. Ambassadors receive training in climate education, landscaping, and community engagement, equipping them with skills in gardening, carpentry, and sustainability. Through their efforts, they enhance public spaces, promote environmental stewardship, and create a cleaner, greener Southwest Philadelphia. This program not only beautifies the community but also provides workforce development opportunities for participants.

Gardens Program

Empowered CDC’s Gardens Program is dedicated to transforming vacant lots into vibrant green spaces that foster community connection, environmental sustainability, and urban agriculture. Our gardens—60th & Greenway, the Glenda Anne Christopher Memorial Garden, and the Cecil Street Garden—serve as vital neighborhood hubs for fresh food access, education, and beautification. With a new five-lot garden coming soon, we continue our mission of revitalization by creating safe, welcoming spaces where residents can gather, grow, and Philly thrive.
